Meet Drake! Drake was wandering in an neighborhood for over a year and no one was able to catch him. Finally, thanks to the local animal shelter and some helpers, they were safely able to catch Drake and he seemed to relieved to not be running any more. Within hours of his arrival at the shelter, he was sitting and shaking paws with the staff. After serving his stray hold at the shelter, no one came to claim him, so he came to GPMR for placement.
Drake is estimated at about 4 years old. He tested positive for a tick-related disease called Ehrlichia and also positive for heartworms. We've treated the tick disease and he received heartworm treatment and did great! He is a typical Velcro Mastiff, follows his foster parents everywhere and lives for food. He seems to be good with cats and other dogs as well but he will chase cats who run from him. Drkae is not recommended for a home with young children but he woiuld be OK with a home with older kids 12 and up.
Drake was diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia on one hip. He won't require surgery but will need to be kept on joint supplments (and we recommend that for all Mastiffs) and he will likely get arthritis in that hip when he is older. Ideally he should have light daily exercise to help keep him active and keep his weight down.
Drake can be very protective of his foster mom especially with men, so he requires a home with a strong leader so he doesn't think he needs to be the guardian of his home. He needs a fenced yard and a family who has experience with the Mastiff breed.
His fee is waived for the right family who is a good match!
Drake is being fostered in Stillwater, OK.
