Meet Maximus! He was surrendered to GPMR when his owners could not afford to provide veterinary care for him. You see, when Max was 1.5 years old, he got out of his yard and was hit by a car. He was taken to the ER vet and had a broken hip, so he had a pin placed in his broken femur bone, and also had the femoral head removed (referred to an FHO surgery). He spent several weeks in the hospital and then went home. His family spent over $10,000 on Max at this time, and so future vet visits were not possible. Max did well for about a year and then started limping badly on the injured leg and eventually could not use it at all. At this time, Max's owners contacted GPMR about turning him over to the rescue.
From the moment we got Maximus, we could see he was extremely thin and wasn't using his back left leg at all. He was infested with fleas and had horrible ear infections as well, which we treated. We took Xrays and discovered that the pin previously in the femur bone had migrated out and was stabbing his muscles and tendons close to his knee. We consulted with our Orthopedic Surgeon who said to bring Max to him the next day and have the pin removed. Max did great for the procedure, the pin was removed and shortly after he started physical therapy to help him regain muscle in his back and hind end. He has completed his therapy and is ready for adoption! Due to the previous trauma Max has endured, he will need to remain on his anti-inflammatory medications for life (he does best on Deramaxx). We also have him on joint supplements and natural supplements as well. All of these together cost about $250 a month. He will never be normal in his hind end, and he occassionally limps on a front leg as well. The Xrays of his front legs were normal, the vet suspects possible muscle or tendon strain from everything he's gone through. Poor Max! Despite all he has endured, Max has a wonderful temperament and truly represents the "gentle giant" nature of a Mastiff. He loves his foster brother and mostly just wants to be with his people. He does great with other dogs but can't have active or rough play with them due to his issues, so a calm companion would he ideal for him. He is best in a home without cats. Max just adores kids but a family with kids over 5 is best due to his previous injuries and large size. Max also needs a home with no stairs and some carpeting in the home as he can slip on the tile floor sometimes. His family needs to be committed to keeping him lean, as any extra weight is bad for his mobility. He likely will have a shorter lifespan with his issues so his family needs to be prepared for that. We are waiving the adoption fee for Max for a family who agrees to keep him on his current regimen of medications and supplements. He will require annual bloodwork for some of these meds and likely will need to add more meds as he ages and develops arthritis. He would likely benefit from acupuncture and regular swimming therapy as well if his family has that available in their area. Maximus is being fostered in Guthrie, OK.
