Meet Melanie! She was rescued from a local shelter where she had been found wandering and no one came to claim her. Mel is a Bullmastiff and while we primarily rescue English Mastiffs, this girl was way too charming to not take! Mel is estimated at 5-6 years old, it's hard to tell for sure because a lot of her teeth are broken. She's lived a hard life and when she was found, was emaciated and loaded with parasites. The shelter did a great job getting her to a healthy weight and deworming her, but she did have to be treated for heartworms and has fully recovered from that and doing great!
Mel had a deformed eye that had to be removed as it was getting infected. She is also mostly deaf. She doesn't miss a beat however, or even a treat! Someone has definitely done some training with her and she responds to hand signals and treats. Mel would be a great candidate for obedience and possibly therapy work too. She just loves everyone she meets and will roll over for belly rubs. She is a bit bossy with other dogs and we're working on socializing her with other dogs. Some of this is because she's been a momma dog several times and being that she was found as a stray we don't know what negative experiences she may have had with dogs on the streets. With slow introductions to new dogs, she seems to do just fine as long as it's a calm dog who doesn't jump in her face. She seems to want to chase small dogs and cats so a home without those would be best!
Mel was diagnosed with arhrithis in her shoulder. Currently she is on supplements but eventually she will need to go on anti-inflammatory medications to manage her condition. And she will need to watch her weight as well, we're currently getting a few pounds off her now :)
Mel is being fostered in Edmond OK.
