Meet Sierra! This girl found herself in need of rescue when her owner was not able to provide for her medical care. She had scheduled a vet appointment to put Sierra down, but her family asked her to try and find someone to take Sierra instead and get her vet care completed. A good samaritan took her in to prevent her from being put down and right away reached out to Rescue for help!
Sierra came to us with a very large tumor on her tail. It was bleeding and quite infected. Unfortunately the only way to remove it was to amputate her tail. She made it through surgery with flying colors and feels so much better now that is taken care of. Thankfully Sierra tested negative for heartworms! Unfortunately about a week after the first surgery, Sierra chewed her stitches out and required a 2nd surgery. About 3 days after that, the stitches failed and fell out, requiring a 3rd surgery! Poor Sierra! She did great through all of her procedures but the day after that third one, she had some kind of reaction and ended up in the ER two days in a row. Her face and legs all swelled up and she had hives on her neck and feet. We never really determined the cause of the reaction, the ER vet said she could have cancer somewhere in her body, or it was a reaction to one of the medications she is on, or a possible autoimmune disorder, or most likely a negative response to having to receive 3 surgeries in an 11 day timeframe. Sierra is on the road to recovery, her tail nub is healed up and her bloodwork is about back to normal. She lost 10 pounds during this whole ordeal and we are working on getting that back on her. Her appetite is great and she is in good spirits! Sierra is 6 years old and is AKC registered. She is showing signs of arthritis and is slow in her hind end when she gets up and down. We've started her on some medications and joint supplements to keep her comfortable. She is a very strong girl and so keeping her lean and providing light daily exercise will go far to prevent her arthritis from progressing too quickly. A home without stairs would be best for her. A couple of stairs to get in and outside is fine but going up to a 2nd story of a house is not ideal for her. Sierra is doing fine with the Mastiff in her foster home and seems to do well with medium-large size dogs. She is reported to chase anything small, so no small dogs, cats or outside pets like chickens for her. She is good with kids and loves every person she meets. She is such a sweetheart and a true velcro Mastiff - she just wants to be wherever her people are! Sierra is being fostered in Edmond, OK.
