Halle's adoption fee is waived as part of our "Fall in Love" Adoption special! ***We will consider potential homes outside of our normal adoption area if they are a good fit for Halle and transport can be arranged! ***
Meet Halle! This sweet girl came in with Lorelai, they were transferred from our friends at the Dallas SPCA. Halle suffered from neglect and had a terrible skin infection from having so many fleas on her body. It was so bad that it would bleed in some areas. Thankfully all of that has cleared up and she's not had any skin issues since. She also had a low thyroid which made her skin issues worse. She started daily meds which are thankfully inexpensive! We also have her on allergy medication called Apoquel during the allergy season. It's really kept her seasonal allergies from causing re-occuring skin infections. The rest of the year she likely would be OK on just Benedryl. Halle has a very comical personality. She is a silly girl who likes to "talk" and keeps her foster parents laughing. She loves to have bones to chew on. Halle also had a genetic condition called entropion. This is where the dog's eyelid roll inward, providing constant irritiation to the eye. She also has a condition called microphthalmia, where her eyes are smaller than normal size, which made the entropion worse. She's had 3 corrective surgeries and doing great and won't need any more procedures done on her eyes! However Halle is prone to getting eye infections and so she gets drops about 2-3 times a week and that seems to help prevent any issues. She also had some kind of injury to her hind leg at some point, it looks a little "off" so we had Xrays done. The vet said it was some kind of old injury however it won't require any kind of surgery and it doesn't seem to bother her so we're thankful for that. She runs and plays and jumps with the best of them! Halle has mixed reviews with other dogs. Like many of our Mastiffs who were mommas before coming to us, when they spend their lives making puppies they tend to be dominant and very bossy with other dogs as that's all they've known raising puppies. She's been fostered with some submissive dogs and done well with them but she we don't leave her unsupervised with other dogs. She has no "off" button when playing and she plays rough and doesn't respond when the other dog has had enough and sometimes her foster parents have to step in and tell her to give it a rest. Honestly the best way to describe is that if she lives with another dog, she will need to be somewhat micromanaged. She is very bonded to the young female Mastiff in her foster home, they always are laying together when inside the house. Halle is definitely a product of her environment - when things are calm she is very relaxed but when things get loud and excited, so does she! And it makes it hard to be well behaved when she gets so over-stimulated. For example when visitors come to the home she tries to paw at them and jump for attention. Things she never does when it's just her and her foster family. She just can't help herself and will definitely be a work in progress for any home with frequent visitors. So a quieter home would probably be best for her. She does like to chase cats so we don't recommend her for a home with kitties. Since we don't have a history of her with children, a home with kids 11 and up would be best. Halle likes to patrol her back yard and bark any dogs or people that are too close to her fence. If you need a dog to alert you to any burglars, this is your girl! She loves being outside and laying in the sun so if you are a family who spends a lot of time outdoors, she would be a good match for you. Halle has the personality of more of a "teenage" Mastiff and requires a home who will continue working on her basic training and set boundaries for her. She's a dog who was failed by her former owner in that they did zero training with her. So while her demeanor is wonderful, she just had very few manners when she first came in, but she's made a ton of progress and so doing so much better. Her adopters will need to be willing to continue the training we've started. She loves treats so that helps! Halle is being fostered in Shawnee, OK.
