Update 4/11/16:
***Duke had surgery to repair the first knee but had a very slow and difficult recovery. We started him in a physical therapy program where he made a lot of progress, but then started limping on his front legs. He tested positive for 2 kinds of tick-related illnesses, which were treated, but the limping continued. We X-rayed the front legs and consulted with the Orthopedic Vet, and poor Duke has been diagnosed with elbow dysplasia in both front legs. Given this new information, the vet is not recommending we proceed with any additional surgery for Duke. We feel he is doing well on his current schedule of supplements and meds and light regular exercise, and we're still looking for a special family to give Duke a special retirement home. His adoption fee will be waived because of his health issues. He's come a long way and is so deserving of a family to pamper him. ***
Meet Duke! He is a 5 year old Fawn Mastiff who was surrendered by his owners when they were no longer able to provide for him financially. Duke has a history of re-occurring ear infections, when he came into rescue he had an active ear infection which has been treated and seems to have resolved. He'll need regular ear cleanings to prevent the infections from returning.
One thing we noticed right away about Duke was that he has a hard time getting up and down and just looking at him you can see something is not right with his hind end. We took him to the vet for Xrays and while his hips are fine, both cruciate ligaments in his knees are torn and require surgery. We are currently researching 2 different surgery options for Duke and he will be on medical hold until he's fully recovered from his procedures.
Despite his knee problems, Duke is as sweet and friendly as they come! He does great with other dogs too.
Duke is being fostered near Oklahoma City, OK.
