Update 6/24/16: Leaper is ready for adoption! He's had his heartworm treatment and eye surgeries as well as being neutered. He handled all of his medical care like a champ. So far he has gained over 40 pounds and has a few more to go.

We've discovered Leaper has some facial paralysis on the left side of his face which the vet thinks is related to long term ear infections related to his general neglect when he came in. He has a bit of a head tilt and a different gait when he runs. We like to say it's part of his charm. :) He can't blink the lower lid of his left eye and as a result has a condition called KCS, or "dry eye" where he has decreased tear production in that eye. Because of that he'll need to be on eye medications for the rest of his life to keep that eye from drying out and prevent infections.

Leaper was found dumped in a rural area in almost the worst shape we've ever seen a dog. At 84 pounds this boy was horribly emaciated and so weak he could barely stand. He was rushed to the vet and hospitalized for a few days to treat his dehydration. Leaper's eyes were so infected with green goo, he could barely see and his ears so infected he could barely hear. Those were cleaned up and treated, he was fed and hydrated with IV fluids and transferred to foster care.

Leaper has a long way to go before he'll be ready for adoption. He will need surgery on one eye to correct his eyelid that rolls inward, and on the other eye he needs to have a small mass removed. He also tested positive for heartworms so we'll be getting those treated as well. He has a bit of a head tilt and sometimes stumbles a bit, it's possible these are related to having ear infections go untreated for so long. We're monitoring that and it's already improved a lot since he came into rescue.

He is a special boy who loves every one he meets including kids. He does great with female dogs of all sizes but a little less accepting of males, and we hope that will improve once he's neutered. He ignores the cat in his foster home.

Leaper is being fostered in Edmond, OK.
