Relinquishing Your Mastiff
Great Plains Mastiff Rescue understands that the choice to surrender your Mastiff is a very difficult one. We hope the following page will help you in doing what is best for your Mastiff. If you purchased your dog from a breeder, please check with that breeder on their policy if one of 'their' dogs is needing to be re-homed. A few breeders will accept the Mastiff back. If you are needing to re-home your Mastiff because of fear issues, please consider behavioral modification training and check out this helpful website on help for fearful dogs.
If you are needing to re-home your Mastiff due to behavioral issues, please consider behavior modification training and obedience training to resolve those problem behaviors before giving up on your Mastiff. If you are local, we highly recommend K9 University.
If your Mastiff is showing physical or behavioral changes, contact your veterinarian and have them do a thorough physical exam. Some behavioral changes can be caused by health related issues and your veterinarian is going to be your best resource for diagnosing and treating that type of problem. If you are giving up your Mastiff due to allergies, please consider consulting an Allergist for treatment and/or suggestions. If you are moving to an apartment this is a good resource to find pet friendly listings.
Before you contact a shelter, please consider the following information. Shelters are overwhelmed with unwanted pets. They don't want to euthanize animals, but there is no other choice when so many dogs and cats are dropped off at the shelter on a daily basis, not to mention the strays animal control picks up. Shelters are required to hold a 'stray' animal for at least 48 hours to give the owner an opportunity to find them. However, if an owner surrenders their pet, the shelter does not have to hold them at all and they can be immediately euthanized. Our local shelters do what they can to adopt out as many animals as they can, but the number is just too great to save them all. Please consider rescue vs. turning over your Mastiff to a shelter.

If you are considering placing your Mastiff yourself, please do not place a "free to good home" ad. Carefully screen adopters. Call their vet and visit their home to ensure your Mastiff will be going to a safe home. You can visit the following site for a sample application. sample adoption application If you decide after reading this page that you would still like to surrender your Mastiff to GPMR, please complete the 'relinquishment' form by clicking on the link below. We would ask that you also submit a photo of your Mastiff along with the relinquishment form. One of our volunteers will be in touch with you to set up a time to evaluate your Mastiff. We conduct temperament testing prior to accepting any Mastiff into rescue. This helps us decide what type of personality the Mastiff has and what family will work best for that particular Mastiff. We also thoroughly screen potential adopters. They fill out an Adoption Application. We review all of the information listed, check references both personal and veterinary, we conduct a phone interview and a home visit prior to placing a Mastiff in a new home. If the potential adopters don't pass any portion of our screening, they are denied the ability to adopt a Mastiff from GPMR. We reserve the right to refuse acceptance of any Mastiff at any time.
